Branch Chairman, Mike Biggs and Branch Secretary Heather Biggs  attended the Wavell School’s 40th Anniversary Prize Giving on 13th July  2010.  This was a particularly special Prize-Giving because the school had  managed to renew its contact with the Wavell Family and were delighted  that Field Marshal Earl Wavell’s grandchildren attended the celebrations.  Mr Owen Humphrys, a Grandson of Lord Wavell, gave a special address  referring to 23rd October 1970 when his Mother, Lady Pamela had  officially opened the Wavell School.  The Headteacher, Amanda Rowley  expressed her thanks for the generous gifts that had been donated to the  School: Field Marshal Wavell’s Travel Trunk and his Blackwatch  Regimental Dirk   A most poignant part of the Ceremony was the unveiling of a  commemorative Sculpture, “The Hug”.  The School Council, Staff and  Governors had given a specific Brief to the Artist, wanting it to capture the  School’s values of Respect and Diversity.  The School was extremely  pleased with the end result and the Artist, Ellinor Atkinson, former student  at The Wavell School, also addressed the audience during the ceremony  explaining the personal significance of the commission for her.   The Headteacher expressed her pride in the School’s ongoing success  since its “Outstanding” Ofsted last year. This year, The Government  announced The Wavell School as a High Performing Specialist School and  part of this work is that of being a Lead School for Gifted and Talented  students. 2009-10 has brought much national recognition to the School in  the form of the School’s ICT Kite Mark; the British Council Connecting  Classrooms Cluster Link Status with Brazil and Consultancy School  Status for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.  WAVELL SCHOOL - 40th ANNIVERSARY PRIZE-GIVING
